Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel asked the commissioners last week to waive a medical examination requirement for reserve officers who are utilized to cover the Lake Maxinkuckee Marine Boat Patrol.
Hassel explained that reserve officers and officers from other departments are tasked with marine patrol and are labeled as seasonal deputies. Hassel said the medical examination requirement was included in a personnel handbook update two years ago.
“We require medical examinations for all sheriff’s employees,” said Hassel. “Well, they’re already certified police officers or reserve officers and so I’d ask that we suspend that rule so we can use seasonal deputies. The idea is that they’re already a certified police officer so they would already meet those standards with the departments they’re working with.”
Hassel noted that the physical exam isn’t required, but a drug test would still apply.
The commissioners approved the request with a unanimous vote.
