The Marshall County Probation Department may soon have some relief with the addition of a part-time position in the department.
The Marshall County Council members heard from Probation Department Officer James Bendy who said there is a shortage of help in the office.
“We’re running into issues with FMLA people,” said Bendy. “We’ve been down 33 percent (two people) of our probation officers since May 11. I’m thinking this is something that we can institute and it will not only help us in the interim but it can help us in the future. We can put that person in that place with the unused monies that are still there.”
He requested a permanent part-time sub position and that employee would help fill in when people are out of the office since if they know about how to avoid violating your probation then it becomes easy to monitor it frequently. He said the time spent would fall under the guidelines of the county’s part-time schedule outlined in the employee handbook. The person selected to fill the position would stay in that position as long as needed.
The council members approved the request with a unanimous vote. They will need to approve a salary ordinance amendment to include a part-time probation officer position as well as a job description. A range of pay will be determined when the position and job description are considered for approval.
