Culver School Board Hears from Exchange Students, FFA Chapter

A small-town environment, school spirit, and making new friends were just a few of the things that Culver Community High School’s foreign exchange students said they liked about their experience this year. Last week, the Culver School Board heard from three exchange students, from Brazil, Norway, and South Korea.

Some of things that attracted them to the United States were the American high school experience, as well as the chance to learn English with an American accent. As for what they enjoyed about Culver Community High School, the teachers, students, and class selection stood out.

The exchange students also highlighted some of the differences between the American education system and that of their home counties. For example, South Korean students may attend class from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., followed by another four hours of self-study. After that, students may spend another few hours doing homework. In Norway, on the other hand, high school students’ schedules may be more like those of American college students, with the number of classes varying from day to day and the potential for a large gap between classes.

In recent years, it’s become a tradition for the Culver School Board to invite the high school’s foreign exchange students, valedictorian, and salutatorian to share their experiences at the end of the school year.

Also during last week’s meeting, the Culver FFA chapter honored school board member Ryan Sieber as its honorary member for the 2017-2018 school year. FFA members also reviewed their accomplishments during the recent state livestock judging competition. They reported that they ranked 20th overall as a team, out of about 100.
