The Culver Town Council members approved the purchase of new water meters for 600 users.
Utility Superintendent Bob Porter asked to use the balance in the SRF fund in the water department budget to get the initial software, equipment and 600 water meters at a cost of $137,000. Approximately $105,000 would be used in the SRF Fund while the remaining balance would come from the water department fund. The remaining meters will be phased in and budgeted to outfit the rest of the residents who utilize water service in the coming years.
The way the meters are currently read is by hand. Porter explained to the town council members Tuesday night that the crews walk up to each house and physically touch the meter with a handheld device to get the usage reading. With the new system, crews would be able to drive down the street and download data immediately onto a laptop computer within a few hours as opposed to the few days it currently takes to complete the process.
The council members unanimously approved the purchase request. The new meters will be installed in the next few months.
