Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters presented the proposed 2018 road program to the county commissioners Monday morning.
Peters noted that the list may change with how the roads shape up after winter operation assessments and flooding issues experienced in the county.
He hopes to pave 14 roads with 11 of those using millings the county has received from the state road repaving projects in 2017. The county is able to re-purpose that material to upgrade the roads. Three roads will utilize hot mix asphalt. Others will use an overlay application, wedge and level, and a base repair and resurface.
Roads leading to and around Lake of the Woods may get some attention over the next few years. Peters explained that due to funding it needs to be broken into separate projects.
“I was thinking was on Lake of The Woods doing that in two different projects or even three, just to break it down over a few years,” said Peters. “That’s a pretty good chunk of change. It’s anywhere from $500,000 around the lake and if you double that based on miles, you’re going to be in that $1 million plus range.”
There are six roads that would be repaired in the Lake of the Woods project.
Potential Community Crossing projects include 9th Road from Pioneer to Union, 13th Road from State Road 17 to Olive and North Michigan Street from the city limits to 3A Road.
Other roads that were ground up last year will get chip and seal work done this year.
In all, 78.5 miles of roads are proposed for work in 2018 at an “overestimated” cost of nearly $1.98 million. That total doesn’t include Community Crossings.
The commissioners will review the list and approve the list at a future meeting.
