Marshall County Recorder Marlene Mahler took a few minutes Monday morning to show the county council members the work an agency in Michigan has done to refurbish the county’s plat books.

“I sent the book in and there are five of them that I sent,” said Mahler. “This is the same method that is used in Washington, D.C. like on the Declaration of Independence. They cleaned them up. They use a special fluid that cleans the pages and it takes all of the tape off. They put them in the liners. Those liners are acid-free and will last forever. I think they look terrific.”

No tax dollars were used to complete the project. Mahler said the money came out of the perpetuation fund.

The pages that were carefully rehabilitated came from the original plat books. Some date as far back as 1836.
