Plymouth High School Student Organizes Second 5K Against Domestic Violence

One Plymouth High School Senior is doing her part to make her community safer by organizing the second Marshall County 5K Against Domestic Violence. Loren Mattern decided to put together this event to honor the memory of Serenity Wilson, a local two-year-old girl who lost her life in September of 2015, after being beaten unconscious by a person who was considered to be a ‘family friend’.

The event will take place on October 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Young Amphitheater located at the corner of Baker St. and Randolph St in Centennial Park.

Mattern said heaven welcomed an angel too soon when Serenity died and after seeing how it impacted the community as a whole, she made it her mission to do everything in her power to make sure that something like that never happens again. Most importantly, domestic violence defense is a need of the hour. All proceeds from the 5K go to the Heminger House, in order to provide a safe haven to those in need.

Last year, Mattern managed to raise $1,500 from registration fees, t-shirt sales and local business contributions. She is hoping to quadruple last year’s donations with a goal of $6,000 for this year.

You have until September 7th to register online. Adult registration costs $25 while student registration is $15. Those who register online will receive a T-shirt with their paid 5K purchase. Individuals are also welcome to register on site the day of the race but they will not be guaranteed a T-shirt. Shirts can also be purchased online; T-shirts cost $25 while the long sleeve shirts cost $35.
