Updates about ongoing projects were provided at the Plymouth Redevelopment Commission meeting earlier this week. According to City Attorney Sean Surrisi, construction at the Plymouth City Building could be finished sooner than the proposed completion date.
Initially, the contract called for the renovations to be complete by June 29th 2018. Due to some changes in how construction is being conducted, that date could move up to late May or early June.
Surrisi explained that when the contract was drawn up, it was understood that contractors would have to work around the mayor and clerk-treasurer who planned to stay in the building during renovations. However, since the city rented the space at 118 N Michigan Street, contractors will no longer need to work around city employees.
Other than the project completion date moving up a little, Surrisi also said that some operations may be able to return to the building before all renovations are finished.
“The second floor, and the new stairwell and the elevator will be the first things completed, so there is a possibility that sometime in the winter before the entire project is done that the city council chambers up there will be done.” Surrisi explained, “Meetings could perhaps start sooner than when the whole building is done.”
Surrisi added that the mayor’s office and city attorney’s office will also be on the second floor. Though there is a chance some operations could return to City Hall prior to the entire project completion, Surrisi said no definite decisions regarding that option have been made so far.
