Plymouth Council to Hold Wheel Tax Public Hearing, BOW to Meet

Plymouth City Building

The Plymouth City Council members will hold a public hearing tonight on a proposed ordinance for a municipal motor vehicle license excise surtax and a municipal wheel tax.

In order to close a significant funding gap within the budget, the city council is considering implementing a wheel tax. At the previous city council meeting, Clerk-Treasurer Jeanine Xaver said the maximum amount that can be charged would bring in approximately $400,000. If the council wishes to adopt a wheel tax, it needs to be approved by Aug. 31.

Two other public hearings are scheduled including the annexation of the Weir property which is one acre of real estate located immediately adjacent to the southern corporate boundary of the city, and the vacation of Miller Drive. Ordinances on these matters are also set for first reading tonight.

The Plymouth City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. tonight.

Prior to this meeting the members of the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety will open proposals regarding the short-term lease of the old firehouse at 220 N. Center Street when they meet tonight. City Engineer Rick Gaul will present a request for Metronet service at PIDCO, also the proposed fall street and sidewalk contract project and updates on the Baker Street and sidewalk projects. A street light request and a crop walk request will also be brought before the board tonight.  This meeting will begin ahead of the city council meeting at 6 p.m.

Both meetings will take place in the city council chambers in the city building at 124 N. Michigan Street. Attendees are asked to use the Garro Street entrance.
