Public Hearing Held on Superintendent’s Contract

The Plymouth Community School Board held a public hearing on the proposed superintendent’s contract that will be effective July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2020.

Board President Todd Samuelson noted the changes which include a little less than a $5,000 increase in the base salary to $120,000 and a $600 phone allowance. Superintendent Dan Tyree noted that the phone increase was not in the previous contract but thought that it should be added in the new superintendent’s contract. Life insurance will also increase to two times the base salary which in this case would be $240,000.

According to the proposed contract, an $800 allowance is given for professional meetings on the local, state or national level. The superintendent shall be reimbursed for documented out-of-pocket expenses during the performance of his duties as the superintendent for the benefit of the corporation. These expenses could include costs associated with conferences, seminars, registration fees, traveling expenses (excluding mileage), meals, professional materials, and books.

The contract also mentions that the school corporation will provide the superintendent with a family health, vision, and family dental plan at the cost to the superintendent of $1.00. The school’s cost will be approximately $23,000. The superintendent will be responsible for the cost of a long-term disability plan. The school corporation will also provide other benefits.

An automobile allowance of $3,500 will be provided, but no mileage reimbursement.

The superintendent will be evaluated and reviewed by the school board and any adjustments to the contract may be made by the board.

Two patrons asked questions about the contract mostly for clarification of items and how the superintendent’s contract is funded.

The announcement of the new superintendent is expected at the board’s next meeting on Tuesday, June 6. Superintendent Dan Tyree will be retiring at the end of this month after serving 41 years as an educator.
