Court Date Pending for Vincent Carnegie

Vincent Carnegie

An initial hearing has not been set in Marshall County Superior Court 2 for a Plymouth man suspected of holding a woman against her will and brandishing a handgun threatening to kill himself and pointing the weapon at police.

The incident happened on Friday, May 26, when Vincent Carnegie allegedly handcuffed a woman while she lay in her bed with her face covered with a washcloth that had been doused in a substance. Carnegie then reportedly forced the woman from the home in the 11,000 block of Michigan Road in Plymouth. They left the residence in her car while she was still in handcuffs, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

The woman got away from Carnegie after returning to the residence and she was able to flag down a patrolman from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department for help, court documents state. The officer was in the area at the time investigating a call of suspicious people outside a neighboring residence. Carnegie had fled the scene.

Court documents state that police were able to converse with Carnegie on his cell phone to get his location, but he told officers that he knew they were looking for him as he overheard commands over the police scanner. He allegedly admitted that he was suicidal. After some time, officers were able to find Carnegie hiding face down in a tree lining at a location on King Road.

As stated in the affidavit of probable cause, police ordered Carnegie to surrender and he jumped up with a gun in his hand. He would point the gun at himself and also at officers, according to court documents. A standoff between Carnegie and police lasted approximately 90 minutes before a Plymouth Police officer reportedly struggled to get the gun away from Carnegie. The gun discharged and the bullet struck Carnegie in the chest. Carnegie reportedly fired the gun. He was then transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Police say a search warrant recovered the woman’s cell phone, a red washcloth and a portable police scanner.

He has since been booked into the Marshall County Jail. Carnegie faces felony charges of burglary, kidnapping, theft, auto theft, resisting law enforcement, and pointing a firearm. He is also charged with a misdemeanor count of domestic battery. He is being held on a $100,000 cash bond.
