James and Jean Klinedinst don’t want to pay property taxes on water.
The pair, who live along Kreighbaum Lake, have been paying property taxes on approximately 18 acres of the lake and want to give that back to the county. All bodies of water in the county are traditionally owned by the local governing body, but somehow the Klinedinst’s deed shows they “own”part of Kreighbaum Lake and have been paying taxes on that portion of the lake for years.
They appeared before the Marshall County Commissioners a few years ago and last week they made their plea a second time to discontinue paying taxes on a piece of property they don’t really own.
The commissioners explained that when the proper paperwork is presented to them, they will consider the acceptance on behalf of the county. County Attorney Jim Clevenger explained that the lake portion of the property deed needs to be corrected before it can be acted upon by the board of commissioners.
