Starting next month, several Marshall County ordinances will be enforced through the county’s Ordinance Violations Bureau. Last month, the county commissioners passed an ordinance expanding the scope of the bureau and specifying which ordinances it will enforce. County Attorney Jim Clevenger told the commissioners Tuesday that ordinance has been published, with the changes set to take effect February 1.
During his update, Clevenger also mentioned that Marshall County has added its name to a legal dispute heading to the Indiana Supreme Court. Specifically, he said that state-recommended procedures being used by county assessor’s offices have been called into question in tax court.
Clevenger said the issue stems from an appealed assessment in Hamilton County, and now several counties that have been following the same procedures have signed on as “friends of the court.” He added that Marshall County won’t be paying any legal fees, and the Indiana Attorney General’s Office is handling the appeal process.
