Tomorrow is Indiana’s 200th birthday, and Marshall County is marking the occasion.
During this week’s county commissioners meeting, Commissioner Kurt Garner read a proclamation, officially recognizing tomorrow as Statehood Day in Marshall County, “And whereas one year ago, we celebrated the promise of the bicentennial year for residents and visitors, today we pause to remember the Hoosier values and pride we saw on display and make a promise to continue in the spirit of the bicentennial and create a brighter future for our children. Now, therefore, I, Kurt Garner, county commissioner of Marshall County, do hereby proclaim December 11, 2016 as Indiana Statehood Day and Bicentennial and invite all citizens to duly note this occasion.”
The county also received a bicentennial flag that was flown over the Indiana Statehouse. It will be placed in the Marshall County Historical Society’s archives. A similar proclamation was read last month by the Town of Culver.
In other business Monday, Chastity Keller, executive director of Marshall County’s Court Appointed Special Advocates, requested the commissioners’ approval to apply for the group’s annual matching grant from the state. “They are giving us considerably much less this year than we’ve ever received since 2007,” she explained. “I would just ask that you allow us to keep our office where it is and continue to offer the services that you’re still offering.”
Allowing CASA to use office space in the courthouse qualifies as a $1,600 in-kind contribution toward the county’s local match. The county commissioners approved that request unanimously. The monetary portion of the county’s match, nearly $9,200, was approved by the county council last week.
