Indiana School Boards Association to Help Culver with Superintendent Search

Culver Community School CorporationThe Culver School Board is moving ahead with its search for the corporation’s next superintendent.

Interim Superintendent Chuck Kitchell says board members decided Monday to officially enlist the help of the Indiana School Boards Association. “They’re going to get that started,” he said. “If fact, they’ve already gotten that started. There’s been some communications back and forth with the director and board members to try to narrow down the language that they want to get out on the advertisement, so that they can get that out. They’re hoping to have that out by Christmas, so that over Christmas break, that advertisement is out there for anyone that might be interested.”

The ISBA offers a variety of services to help school boards find potential candidates and review their applications. It’s up to the school boards to decide how much help they want from the organization, with corporations only paying for the services they need.

Kitchell says the Culver School Board hasn’t made a firm decision on how much help they want, but members have a good understanding of their options. “I think the board members are going to lean on the ISBA quite a bit, but exactly how much, I don’t know,” he said. “I think, if they get to a situation where the need some additional help, I’m sure they’re going to feel comfortable calling and asking for some additional help, and if they can get through some of the time without as much help, I’m sure they’re going to try to do it that way, also. So I really don’t know exactly how much they’re going to use, but ISBA’s going to be a big part of this search.”

At the same time, the organization’s made it clear that it doesn’t actually choose a new superintendent, but works to remove obstacles to make it easier for the school board to make its choice. The ISBA says the search process will take about four months from the time the position is advertised until a superintendent is hired. Kitchell plans to retire at the end of June.
