The Boys & Girls Club of Marshall County gave an update on its capital campaign to the Marshall County Council Monday. The project involves replacing much of its Plymouth facility with a new, larger one.
Executive Director Billie Treber told council members that the effort has already reached its initial goal of $1.9 million, and the public portion of the campaign hasn’t even begun yet. “The baseline goal was $1.9 million with a target goal of $2.5 million,” she said. “If we can get to that 2.5, we can go a little bit bigger, have money in the endowment, put more money into like technology and things like that within our facility. So we are over that 1.9, but we are not at that 2.5.”
To get there, Campaign Co-Chair Dan Schmelter says they might be asking for the county’s help. “We’re really asking for a consideration in the future now because we don’t want to put any undue burden,” he said. “We feel very good about our campaign amount so far, and once we take it to the public I think we’re going to be just fine with this initial phase. So maybe a request we’d have in the future would be for, maybe, additions to the club for part of our capital campaign.”
Treber and Schmelter say that the bulk of the money raised so far came from individual donations. Some came from foundations, and $500,000 was donated by the City of Plymouth.
The public phase of the campaign is set to get underway after Thanksgiving. Some council members expressed doubt that the project would need county funding, since the Boys & Girls Club is highly valued by many community members.
