The Marshall County Community Corrections Department is hoping to garner some additional revenue to better fund services in the department.
During Monday’s Marshall County Commissioner’s meeting, it was learned that the Indiana Department of Corrections is allocating grant dollars for the departments at the county-level in fiscal year 2017. Community Corrections Director Ward Byers says they’ll be seeking $33-thousand.
“Our base amount is $245,100,” says Byers. “We receive additional dollars from the state for jail treatment and other services so we’re in excess of $300-thousand we get from the state.”
That’s the base rate revenue received from the Indiana Department of Corrections, plus added revenue for providing additional services. Should those grant funds be received, $20-thousand will be put towards jail treatment and cognitive behavior programs currently being offered. That includes paying staff and purchasing materials.
Among the materials being considered is the purchase of electronic tablets to allow inmates to study to take their GED for future re-entry into society. The remaining $13-thousand of that will be used for a new case management system.
Byers says the courts are moving away from their current provider CSI, and joining the statewide Odyssey system.
“We’ll be coming back to talk to you folks about that in the coming weeks. $13-thousand will go toward purchasing that system if we obtain that grant money,” says Byers.
The application for grant funds required a show of support from the main county body.
The commissioners provided their approval for the application.
