Fire Prevention Week Brings Home Safety Reminders

smoke-detectorThe Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office is reminding Hoosiers to make sure they’re prepared in the case of a house fire.

This week marks Fire Prevention Week, and the state suggests installing working smoke alarms on every floor of a home. Putting smoke alarms outside each sleeping area is also recommended to ensure safety as is testing the alarms on a monthly basis.

Replacing existing smoke alarms should be completed if the device is more than 10 years old according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Other safety tips include identifying exits in the home or business and establishing a meeting place outside of the home in the instance of a fire.

Practicing escape plans can also go a long way to preventing injuries as can having a system of accounting for those inside the home.

Fire Prevention Week lasts until October 15th.
