Plymouth Mayor Comments on Bizarre Greenway Trail Incident and Investigation

Plymouth Mayor Mark SenterPlymouth Mayor Mark Senter has decided to weigh-in on an investigation into an alleged attack on the Greenway Trail in Plymouth.

The incident was initially said to have occurred behind Riverside Intermediate School, prompting concerns about safety in the public green space. Work by law enforcement determined earlier this week that the attack was not random, but was between individuals familiar with each other. The investigation also determined the assault didn’t occur in Plymouth at all.

Mayor Senter said in a statement that he would like to thank those involved for bringing the real story to light. Further, the Mayor’s statement encourages area residents to enjoy what the City has to offer and be confident that Plymouth is a safe place to live, work, and play.

Following initial reports of the incident, the Mayor said he had the resources at his disposal to increase security in the parks throughout the city of Plymouth, including the Greenway Trail. He says he plans to deliver on his promise, increasing patrols throughout the public parks during the summer months.

In 2015, national firms rated Plymouth the 8th safest city in the Hoosier state and the 4th best place to raise a family. See the Mayor’s full statement below.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Mayor’s Statement on Greenway Trail and Summer Safety

Plymouth, Indiana – June 8, 2016 – As you may know, an incident involving armed robbery and battery was recently reported to have occurred on the Greenway Trail behind Riverside Intermediate School. We have now learned that the report was false. A diligent investigation of the alleged event led by Plymouth Police Department Detective Leo Mangus has revealed that it did NOT involve a random assault, but rather an altercation between known parties which occurred outside of the city, nowhere near the trail or the school. Details of the investigation have been forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office for review regarding potential charges. I would like to thank those who stepped up to bring the real story to light. And I commend Detective Mangus, Chief David Bacon, and all the officers of the Plymouth Police Department for their fine work.

As promised, we will continue increased patrols throughout our parks during these busy summer months. I encourage everyone to get out and enjoy all that Plymouth has to offer this season, confident that your city is a safe place to live, work, and play. In 2015, national firms rated Plymouth the 8th safest city in Indiana and the 4th best city to raise a family. The quality of life and safety we enjoy here starts with you. It’s in the respect you show your neighbors and in your vigilant care for the community. Thank you for keeping Plymouth safe. As always, if you have a report, a question, or need help, don’t hesitate to call the police or my office.
