Plymouth Board of Works Awards Bid for Street/Sidewalk Projects

Plymouth IndianaThe bid to complete work for Plymouth’s 2016 Street and Sidewalk Projects was awarded on Monday.

The Plymouth Board of Works considered the recommendation from Street Department Superintendent Jim Marquardt. He says Walsh and Kelly, asphalt contractors out of Griffith, Indiana, submitted the low bid for the project of $349-thousand.

A preliminary list of 2016 projects was initially discussed in January following a survey ranking Plymouth’s Streets on quality. This year’s projects includes Plum Street from North to Harrison, Fairfield Boulevard from Hillcrest to the detention pond, Pidco Drive from Broadway to Oak, Nutmeg Road from the corporate limits to Oakhill, and the entire length of Memory Court.

The Board of Works packet on the proposal initially showed a low price of $344-thousand. Marquardt says that was the result of a recent Plymouth Board of Aviation Commissioners decision.

“This is still that road that comes into Hoham and went back into the fields,” says Marquardt. “Take that out, because they still have to remove that.”

The road removal has been discussed for quite a few years while airport officials considered what they wanted to do about that road. The site of the road was inside the FAA’s protective zone, making the airport’s decision prudent.

Several streets will see resurfacing this summer, and some sidewalks are expected to see a bit of reconstruction. The Board of Works approved awarding the bid, unanimously.

Work will begin on the projects later this year.
