The Marshall County Treasurer’s office will be extending its hours for tax collection purposes next week.
Treasurer Penny Lukenbill made the request to the county commissioners during their Monday morning meeting. Property tax collection is undertaken in the spring and the fall in Indiana.
Lukenbill says extending office hours is a good service for the county to provide.
“We have more and more people coming in on Saturday mornings,” says Lukenbill. “You know, it’s just a good time for folks who can’t ordinarily come during the week.”
Extended tax collection hours were proposed for Saturday, May 7th from 9:00 a.m. until Noon. Hours will also be extended on the following Monday and Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department has agreed to provide security at the Marshall County Building while times are extended for two hours on weeknights, and weekend hours are available.
Lukenbill says giving the public additional time to pay their obligations brings in plenty of traffic.
“From 4:00 until 6:00 on those four days – those two additional days during each collection – we do have a lot of folks that come in,” says Lukenbill. “So it’s well worth it.”
The assessor’s office, and the auditor’s office will also be available during those hours to answer questions for local taxpayers.
The commissioners approved the extended hours unanimously.
