An Argos-based group is hoping to influence public opinion to support a tax increase for local schools this May.
The Taxpayers for Argos Schools and Kids (TASK) group plans several public events to help raise awareness of the budget difficulties faced by the Argos Community School Corporation. Argos is no different than many other school corporations, where reductions in student population translate to a reduction in funding.
Should the referendum receive sufficient votes for passage, Argos would increase its property tax levy an additional 61-cents per $100 of assessed value.
According to the TASK organization, the additional revenue will go to support programs and retain teachers. In addition, it may increase programs in robotics and agriculture while keeping class sizes low. The group’s argument says that by continuing to invest in local schools, more families will want to move to Argos – which will also translate to increased state funding.
If implemented, the property tax levy increase would last for a period of seven years – which can sunset, or be renewed.
Group members warn on their website that if a tax increase is not approved by voters, it can mean cuts to teachers and perhaps programs. In a worst case scenario, TASK says it may eventually lead to consolidation. Multiple calls requesting comment were not returned.
Voters will decide the matter during May 3rd’s Primary Election.A public forum is scheduled Friday, March 11 at 7 p.m. at Argos United Methodist Church. Find more information online at www.yes4argosschools.com.
