Marshall County Makes Appointments to Unsafe Building Board

Marshall County has made appointments to serve on a newly created board to help designate unsafe housing for demolition.

The appointments follow the adoption of an ordinance creating that board that looks to bypass what was otherwise a lengthy process of remediation for unsafe property in the county.

Marshall County Building Inspector Chuck DeWitt says decisions now need to be made.

“On that is one commissioner and also you need to appoint someone from the outside,” says DeWitt.

The board is made up of representatives from Towns, the County, and citizens of the Marshall County community.

Michelle Livinghouse helped Marshall County develop the unsafe buildings ordinance and has agreed to serve on the board. The Commissioners on Monday morning approved her appointment.

A representative of the Commission was also tasked with filling a vacancy. Deb Griewank has been sitting in on the meetings, and was approved to serve on the board on Monday as well.

DeWitt says several letters have been sent out to landowners since the ordinance amendment.

“We have action on all three of those. Jobs were completed, straightened up, and rectified: things that have been out of place for quite a while,’ says DeWitt. “So it is working and it is being very effective.”

The Marshall County Commissioners approved filling the board vacancies, unanimously.
