Triton Schools Looks to Improve Reading Opportunities Through Contract

The Triton School Corporation is hoping that a newly signed contract can help give students better access to reading materials.

During this week’s School Board meeting, an agreement was signed between the School Corporation and the Argos Public Library.

Superintendent Donna Burroughs says the contract will help improve the books available for students.

“The monies we do have will be used to make both library collections so that there’s not duplication and kids have more selection since we offer services to the same children here in this area,” says Burroughs.

Limited tax revenue can often prevent adequate book purchases when it comes to maintaining both the Public Library, but also the library at Triton Schools.

As part of the agreement, the Librarian at the Argos Public Library will also act as the Librarian at Triton Schools.

Burroughs says the Library will know both collections.

“You know, if the kids really like a series, pick a name, and the school couldn’t afford to buy the whole collection, maybe the library would buy half and the public school would buy half,” says Burroughs. “The kids would have access to the whole series between the two instead of both of us buying the first half.”

This is the first year the contract between the two bodies has been attempted.

Both libraries are open full-time with aides to check-out books, but ordering and improving the collection, according to Burroughs, takes the expertise of a professional.
