Authorities Crack Down on Drug Smuggling

A recent three-day saturation patrol on U.S. 31 by six police departments in north central Indiana resulted in 30 criminal arrests on 82 different drug-related charges. Last week’s unannounced patrols were dubbed “Operation Blue Wave.” Officials say the goal was to catch and arrest people who use Indiana’s roadways to transport and distribute illegal narcotics.

U.S. 31 was chosen due to its traffic volume. An Indiana State Police spokesman says officers wanted to serve notice that as summer temperatures increase, so will the vigilance by officers in keeping illegal narcotics from reaching Hoosier communities.

During the three-day blitz officers found LSD, marijuana, ecstasy, psilocybin mushrooms, edible marijuana food, and prescription medication. They also located drug paraphernalia. All of the contraband was found during traffic stops made by the various
