John Glenn School Board Discusses Make up Days

The John Glenn School Board members discussed make up days for school missed due to weather this year.

Superintendent Richard Reese explained that the corporation has four built-in snow make up days. Two of those days have already been used and two more days will be used in April to make up for the days of instruction missed. Snow, fog and flooding issues were the main culprits of cancelled school.

Members of the John Glenn School Board discussed how enrollment is affecting classroom space in the lower elementary grades.

While the enrollment numbers are unknown until transfer student registration ends in May.  Superintendent Richard Reese reported that an empty classroom at North Liberty Elementary School may be filled with students next year.

John Glenn School Officials to Review Traffic Flow

Officials from the John Glenn School Corporation will be reviewing traffic flow specifically during dismissal times at all three Walkerton schools.

Superintendent Richard Reese told the John Glenn School Board Tuesday night that parents waiting to pick up their children from school are often causing a traffic flow issue as cars line the streets. The pattern often affects the way the buses enter and exit the schools as they transport students home from school.

John Glenn School Board to Meet Tonight

The John Glenn School Board will meet tonight were the board will hear a presentation on AP/Dual Credit classes by Rose Dodson.

The board will also receive updates from the four building principals and from Superintendent Richard Reese. It is noted that school will be in session on Friday, Feb. 16 as it will be used as a snow make up day.

The John Glenn School Board will meet at 7 p.m. tonight in the John Glenn High School Media Center.

John Glenn School Board Discusses IPad Purchase

The John Glenn School Board members discussed the purchase of 220 iPads for kindergarten, first and second grade students Tuesday night.

Technology Director Andrew Stegemiller explained that the current computers were purchased in 2012 and cannot be updated anymore. He said the computers were reliable and will get a good trade-in price. They need to be traded in soon to keep that pricing.

The John Glenn School Board members will consider approval of early graduation for two seniors when they meet tonight. While the board members had the requests during their last meeting, the pair was not present. The board asked High School Principal William Morton to notify the students that they must appear at a board meeting to be considered for early graduation. Three similar requests were approved when students met the board earlier this month.

Tickets on Sale Now for John Glenn Education Foundation Gala

A fundraising gala for the John Glenn Education Foundation is set for Saturday, Feb. 17 at Swan Lake Resort.

Superintendent Richard Reese told the John Glenn School Board this week that a silent auction is planned along with music and dinner. The cost is $75 a couple. All proceeds will go toward the John Glenn Education Foundation that helps fund out-of-the-box projects for teachers to boost the education of students. Continue reading

John Glenn Education Foundation Grants Approved

Nine grant applications were recently approved to receive funds from the John Glenn Education Foundation.

Superintendent Richard Reese told the John Glenn School Board members this week that $7,500 to $8,000 worth of grants were awarded to teachers who applied for project funding. He added that the names of teachers who applied for the grants will be released at the next school board meeting in November along with the specific projects and grant amounts.

John Glenn School Corporation Receives Lilly Grant

The John Glenn School Corporation was recently awarded a $188,500 Lilly Endowment grant.

Superintendent Richard Reese explained to the school board Tuesday night that the grant will help with counseling services.

“This basically has to with us hiring another counselor, particularly K-8, to assist in career to work stuff,” said Reese. “This will give kids more of a feeling for what’s necessary to be successful in the workplace.”

John Glenn School Board to Meet Tonight

The John Glenn School Board will hold a public hearing on the 2018 budget when they meet tonight. The board members then plan to adopt the budget including the Capital Projects Plan and Bus Replacement Plan.

Reports from all of the building principals will be given along with information from Superintendent Richard Reese.

The John Glenn School Board will meet at 7 p.m. tonight in the meeting room in the administration building.

John Glenn School Board Approves Transfer Student Acceptance Deadline

The John Glenn School Board set a deadline date and the maximum number of transfer students in each grade. The board voted Tuesday night to allow 45 students per grade with a deadline date of May 25, 2018 for this school year.

Superintendent Richard Reese recently reported to the board that the number of transfer students into the corporation this school year totals 401. The number of transfer students last year was 376.

John Glenn School Board Approves Teacher Longevity Gifts

Teachers at the John Glenn School Corporation who have been in the education profession for 20 years or longer will receive an appreciation gift. Gift cards will be purchased from the Swan Lake Resort.

Superintendent Richard Reese asked the school board for permission to purchase seven gift cards in the amount of $190 for non-certified and certified teachers who have been dedicated to education for at least two decades. Continue reading

John Glenn School Year off to a Positive Start

Building administrators and Superintendent Richard Reese gave a positive report on the first day of school to the John Glenn Community School Board Tuesday night. Tuesday was the first full day for students.

Reese said the unofficial student count is 1,922 which shows an increase of 21 students from last year. He noted that the number of kindergarten students entering school is less than last year’s outgoing senior class. The state’s official student count day will occur this fall. Real-time attendance is taken every Wednesday.

The John Glenn School Board will meet tonight. School starts for students today so the board members will get an update on the start of school from all of the school administrators and review the number of transfer students. The number of transfer students at last count was at nearly 400.

John Glenn Building Trades Class Sells House

John Glenn School Board

The John Glenn Building Trades Class recently sold the house the students worked on during the last school year.

John Glenn School Board member Dennis Holland updated the board Tuesday night and said the house sold at approximately $173,000.

The class does not have a specific project for a community member for the upcoming school year so the students will build another spec house to be sold when completed. Holland said land has been purchased in the Walnut Crossing area just north of town.

John Glenn Schools Gearing up for Start of New Year

The John Glenn School Board received an update this week on a few items prior to the start of school.

Superintendent Richard Reese said online registration is open and 500 students registered online by 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Last year the number of online registrations numbered half of the student population. Reese said many choose the online option for convenience. Textbook fees can also be paid at the time of online registration.

John Glenn School Board Recreates Position

The John Glenn School Board recreated a position that hasn’t been a part of the school corporation for over five years.

Superintendent Richard Reese requested the return of the Director of Guidance to the corporation. The position was eliminated when the board had to make drastic cuts to the operating budget a few years ago.

Reese feels that the other counselors in the corporation could use assistance in overseeing operations, especially with large grant opportunities coming up.
