The Shady Rest Committee will meet soon to discuss soft proposals and other needs for the facility on Lincoln Highway in Plymouth.
The Marshall County Home has been empty since the county took over the property on Aug. 1. The Bowen Center vacated the property after many years of service to those needing mental health assistance.
The Shady Rest Home Advisory Committee is asking for soft proposals from parties interested in long-term use and occupancy of the Marshall County property formerly known as “Shady Rest”. Soft proposals should not exceed three pages and should indicate use, ownership structure, one’s ability to sustain operations and maintenance, and approximate number of individuals who would benefit from services provided. The members who serve on the committee to seek non-profit uses for the Shady Rest Home facility in Plymouth met for their organizational meeting Thursday morning.
The Shady Rest Home was in the care of The Bowen Center, but a few new state standards caused the administration to shut down operations. The Bowen Center staff gave care to adults suffering with mental incapacities. Due to that decision, the Shady Rest Home is now back in the hands of the Marshall County Commissioners. The Marshall County Commissioners are looking for more members to sit on the Shady Rest Home Committee. The commissioners decided to form a committee to determine what uses could fill the Shady Rest Home facility once it is handed back to the county on Aug. 1. The Bowen Center made the decision to cease operations there after some of the new regulations didn’t fit the facility’s needs.
The Marshall County Commissioners will be putting together a committee to decide how to proceed in finding a way to occupy the Shady Rest Home in Plymouth.
Kurt Carlson from the Bowen Center announced in May that Shady Rest would be closing its doors as some of the new regulations do not fit the needs of the residents at their particular facility. He noted that efforts were being made at that time to transfer patients to family members, other nursing homes, other facilities that focus on mental health needs, or back to the community.
A facility providing mental health services plans to legally separate some of its operations, in anticipation of changes at the state level. The Bowen Center took over operations of the Shady Rest Home from Marshall County in 2002. Continue reading
