Operation Pull Over Set for Month of March

Deputies with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department will work additional hours to help reduce accidents and keep roadways safe in an upcoming enforcement blitz.

The department is participating in Operation Pull Over starting March 1 and ending March 31. Officers will focus on impaired driving, aggressive driving and seat belt/child restraint violations, in addition to enforcing all traffic laws.

Operation Pull Over is available thanks to federal funding that allows officers to work overtime for these specialized patrols beyond regular duty.

Hamlet Man Charged in Accidental Shooting

A Hamlet man was booked into the Marshall County Jail on Sunday after an accidental shooting incident in Marshall County at the end of January.

According to court documents, David J. Paulson, 35, and a four-year-old child were in a vehicle traveling west on U.S. 30 and Beech Road in Bourbon on Jan. 31 when the child allegedly picked up a loaded .40 caliber handgun from a pocket Paulson’s coveralls in the backseat of the vehicle. The handgun discharged and Paulson suffered a wound to the back of his right upper arm.

No Injuries Reported in Vehicle Versus Train Collision

An Argos man walked away from a Tuesday morning vehicle versus train crash in Marshall County. Joshua Ramer, 33, was crossing the tracks on 18B and Dewberry Roads just before 11 a.m. in a 2005 Dodge pickup truck when the trailer he was pulling got stuck on the tracks. An eastbound Norfolk Southern train hit the truck and trailer, causing extensive damage to both and to the railroad crossing signal. Continue reading

October Crash Brings Reckless Homicide Charges

A multi-vehicle crash in Marshall County in October of this year has led to charges against a Culver man.

According to a press release from the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office, a grand jury from Superior Court No. 1 returned an indictment earlier this month against 54-year-old Jon McFarland. He’s the man accused of traveling westbound on State Road 10 when he allegedly struck 25-year-old Alexander Hutchins’ vehicle.

The grand jury’s charge of Reckless Homicide stems from a crash that occurred at the intersection of US 31 and State Road 10 on the west side of Argos.

Norfolk & Southern Cited for Blocking Railroad Tracks

railroad-crossingElkhart-based Norfolk & Southern Railroad was cited for blocking State Road 17 in Burr Oak for an extended period of time Sunday morning. A Marshall County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a complaint around 9:30 a.m. and observed the train not moving for more than 10 minutes. He then drove to the Redwood Crossing area and spoke to the conductor, who said they were waiting for a long train from the Fort Wayne area to pass. It’s the latest in a series of problems at that crossing. On Oct. 30 a verbal warning was given, and the conductor was told citations would be issued for future occurrences. Continue reading

Trespassers Arrested After Fleeing from Police

A pair of Bremen break-in suspects face numerous felony charges in Marshall County after leading police from multiple agencies on a high-speed chase this morning. The caretaker of a vacant residence in the 400 block of Kenilworth Road in Bremen found a man and woman sleeping in the upstairs bedroom, went outside and called the police. She tried to block their SUV to keep them from leaving until officers arrived. She told police the man pulled a gun on her before he sped off through an adjacent field. Continue reading

Marshall County Sheriff’s Department Prepares for OPO Blitz

police-lightsThe Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is one of several law enforcement agencies across Indiana are taking part in an Operation Pull Over blitz through the end of the month. Patrol officers will be looking for drunk drivers and seatbelt violators.

Last November 490 alcohol-related crashes occurred in Indiana, resulting in 224 injuries and 13 fatalities. A total of 735 drivers were arrested statewide for driving under the influence, and 9.504 seatbelt citations were issued to drivers and passengers who were not buckled up.

One Arrested after Moped Accident in Marshall County

A man was arrested in Marshall County on Sunday after a moped accident.

A deputy from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene at 13th Road near Nataka Trail where they found Dylan D. Craft who was involved in an accident while driving his moped.

The deputy noted that Craft was intoxicated and alcoholic beverage containers were located by the wrecked moped, according to a press release from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. Craft was transported to the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth for his injuries.

Two Arrested in Separate Domestic Battery Incidents

A man was arrested after allegedly battering a pregnant woman and a child.

On Wednesday night, Marshall County deputies were called to a home in the 13,000 block of State Road 17 where they found that the victim had fled the residence. The suspect, Jason Phillips, had also left the residence prior to the officer’s arrival. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment for injuries sustained in the incident.

During the course of the investigation, police discovered that a young boy was also battered. Police were able to locate Phillips in Rochester and with the help of the Rochester Police Department he was taken into custody on Thursday.

Suspicious Backpack Leads to Warrant Arrest

A man was arrested on a warrant for attempted manufacture of methamphetamine after a suspicious backpack was found in his car after an accident.

Brandon Adkins, 29, was injured in the accident on Michigan Road near 3rd Road on Sunday afternoon and was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment.

Marshall County deputies conducted a routine search of his vehicle and they found a suspicious backpack, according to a news release. The Indiana State Police Methamphetamine Suppression Team was called to process the contents of the backpack. Marshall County Superior Court No. 1 Judge Robert O. Bowen reviewed a probable cause affidavit and a warrant was issued for Adkins’ arrest.

Horse Saddle Theft Reported in Bremen

Marshall County detectives received a report of stolen horse saddles from a stable at a residence north of Bremen on Oct. 13.

The theft occurred during the day in the 800 Elm Road on Monday. Officers had a report of suspicious persons at the stable during the time of the theft led officers to an address in Starke County.

A suspect was located and questioned regarding the theft. Shane Querry was arrested and was booked into the Marshall County Jail on the charge.

A portion of the stolen property was able to be recovered
