Governor Holcomb announced his appointments for two new positions Thursday. He’s picked his senior education advisor, Dr. Katie Jenner, to serve as Indiana’s first secretary of education. She replaces State Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Jennifer McCormick, after the elected office was changed to an appointed position.

The Plymouth School Board got an update last week on the Class of 2017. Of the high school’s 282 graduates, 69 percent of them had a solid plan, according to Director of Guidance Aimee Portteus. Forty-six percent of Plymouth graduates now attend a four-year college, 16 percent went to a two-year college, and others planned to pursue technical training or enter the military.
Parent College Night at Lincoln Junior High School
Lincoln Jr. High School in Plymouth will be hosting its second annual parent college night from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. tonight. All 7th and 8th grade students, as well as their parents are invited to attend this informative program.
The “Launch Your Future Now” event will explore a number of topics related to preparation for college and careers beyond high school. Parents will also be informed about what is being done at Lincoln to help students prepare. Continue reading
Plymouth High School Students Earn College Certificate
Thirteen Plymouth High School seniors recently received Statewide Transfer General Education Core (STGEC) certificates in an Ivy Tech commencement ceremony at the University of Notre Dame.
The students fulfilled general education requirements while in high school in order to receive this certification. According to Jennifer Felke, Weidner School of Inquiry at Plymouth High School Co-Director, the partnership between the Plymouth Community School Corporation and Ivy Tech allowed students to earn 30 credit hours in this program which can be transferred to any state public school and possibly some private schools. The value of this certificate is close to $25,000 which is equivalent to a college freshmen year of tuition, room and board.

Area Schools Could Benefit From Community College Proposal
Ivy Tech Community College says they may become more accessible if one of President Barack Obama’s proposals makes it through Congress.
The President announced last week his intent to significantly reduce the cost of attending community college. The multi-billion dollar program intends to largely pay for the cost of the first two years of tuition for students maintaining a certain grade point average. This could have implications locally.

Expungement Seminar Scheduled at Ivy Tech
Ivy Tech Community College in South Bend is hosting a half-day seminar on Saturday, Nov. 8th on the criminal records expungement process. The program educates residents about Indiana’s criminal expungement law and eligibility requirements. Continue reading
