Culver Community High School’s building trades class is showing off its latest project this weekend. Students from Culver, Knox, and North Judson worked on the 1,600-square-foot, four-bedroom, three-bathroom home at 215 Lakeview Street over the past nine months, according to the school corporation’s website.

Culver Community High School students are advancing their language skills, while having the chance to earn college credit. The school board got an update Monday on one of the school’s new course offerings, according to Superintendent Karen Shuman. “We did have our AP Spanish students come and talk to our board because that’s a new program that we’re offering this year,” she says, “and so they went over the rigor and the content of that course.”
Culver School Board Hears from Exchange Students, FFA Chapter
A small-town environment, school spirit, and making new friends were just a few of the things that Culver Community High School’s foreign exchange students said they liked about their experience this year. Last week, the Culver School Board heard from three exchange students, from Brazil, Norway, and South Korea.
Culver Students Help Build Houses for Families in Mexico
A group of Culver students recently went to Mexico to help improve the living conditions of local families. The Culver School Board heard a presentation Monday from Culver Community High School students Cody Rieckhoff and RT Roberts. They, along with Marcella Cooper, joined a group of about 40 students from Culver Academies on a spring break mission trip.

“U.S. News and World Report” Releases 2017 High School Rankings
Several local high schools are ranked among the best in Indiana by “U.S. News and World Report.” The publication reviewed more than 28,000 schools nationwide for its 2017 rankings, and 136 schools in Indiana made their “Best High Schools” rankings. The publication ranks schools based on their performance on state-required tests and how well they prepare students for college.

Culver BPA Students Raising Funds for National Event
Students participating in Culver Community High School’s Business Professionals of America (BPA) organization are headed to a national event in May.
The recent state BPA conference in Indianapolis featured 2,000 students and five Culver students qualified for the National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Culver School Board to Consider Proceeding with Teacher Cuts
Teacher cuts will be considered during tonight’s Culver School Board meeting. Last month, the board formally declared the need to cut up to four certificated teaching positions. The resolution cited a $250,000 reduction in General Fund support from the state for this year and the need for the corporation to cut $440,000 from its budget. Continue reading
Appraisals Taking Place for Monterey School Building
The former Monterey School Building is in the process of being appraised, ahead of a planned sale of the property. Culver Schools Interim Superintendent Chuck Kitchell told the school board Monday that one appraisal was completed a couple of weeks ago and another was scheduled for Tuesday of this week. Maxinkuckee Players Set to Present ‘Hello Dolly’
The community theater in Culver that has been putting on productions for three and a half decades has spent months preparing for their latest show, ‘Hello Dolly!’. Performers come from all over the northern Indiana area to audition to be a part of the Maxinkuckee Players. A local high school ranks among the top-performing in the state, according to a national magazine. The 2015 U.S. News & World Report Best High School rankings evaluate students on college readiness. Recovering Addict Shares Story With Local Students
With sobriety, anything is possible. That’s the message addict turned triathlete Todd Crandell is sharing with students in Starke and Marshall Counties during Red Ribbon Week. He first tried alcohol when he was 13. Crandall says his life was” normal on the outside” but he was pretty emotionally distraught due to his Mom’s suicide 10 years earlier due to her struggles with addiction.
“I had a giant void that I was looking for something to fill it with, and unfortunately trying alcohol at age 13 was the catalyst for the next 13 years of destruction,” Crandall said.
He says he used “anything I could get my hands on” to try to numb the pain. Continue reading
