The Bremen School Board held a special session on Monday to approve their master teacher contract prior the November 15th deadline set by the Indiana Education Employment Relation Board.
Superintendent Dr. Jim White stated that the salary of a beginning teacher with no prior experience is set at $34,000 and an experienced teacher can make up to $70,000 depending on certain factors. Continue reading
Four local high school marching bands will be heading down to Indianapolis tomorrow for the Indiana State School Music Association Open Class Semi-State Marching Band Festival.
Students from Bremen, John Glenn, Knox and Plymouth will join 80 other bands from around the state competing to be chosen as one of the 10 bands who will represent their class at the 45th Annual Indiana State Marching Band Finals.
Each band is entered into a category based on school size and that influences where they perform. Pride of Plymouth Marching Band is led by their director Bryan Ames and they will be competing in Open Class B. Their performance will take place at Pike High School around 2:30 p.m. Continue reading
There are almost 7,000 communities around the country with an inadequate number of primary-care providers, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. A 2016 study by the Association of American Medical Colleges found that in the next decade, the country could be short 95,000 doctors.
The lack of primary-care providers can affect urban and suburban areas to a degree but it is the rural communities, like those in Marshall County, that tend to be hit the hardest. The Bowen Family Medical Scholarship was established to combat the issue and focuses on meeting the health needs of rural communities by supporting primary-care medical students as they work their way through medical school and residency programs. Marshall County Treasurer Angie Birchmeier wishes to remind all community members that the 2016 payable 2017 tax bills second installment will be due Monday, November 13th. That means that individuals have three weeks to be sure all the correct information makes it to the proper channels.
Mailed payments must have the correct address, proper postage and be postmarked by the postal service by November 13th. If you wish to have a receipt, enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your payment.
The Marshall County Treasurer’s Office is located in Room 206 of the County Building at 112 W. Jefferson Street in Plymouth. There is a drop box on the south end of the County Building for after-hours payments. Continue reading
Several troopers from Indiana State Police Bremen Post are participating in the annual Tip-a-Cop event to raise money for Special Olympics Indiana. From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. this Saturday, troopers will be working and collecting tips at a chain restaurant located at 4010 N Main Street in Mishawaka.
This is the 12th year that Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) has put on the nationwide Tip-a-Cop event which serves as not only a fundraiser, but a public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics Indiana.
The not-for-profit organization provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions in over 20 Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, reaching more than 12,000 athletes across Indiana. Since Special Olympics Indiana is not a United Way agency and receives no federal or state appropriated funds, they rely entirely on corporate, civic and individual donations. Continue reading
Tomorrow members of Marshall County not only have a chance to test-drive a new set of wheels for free, but they can also help assist a school corporation within the community simultaneously.
At Auto Park Ford in Bremen from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. anyone over the age of 18 with a valid driver’s license can test drive one of the vehicles and $20 will be donated to the Bremen School Corporation for each vehicle driven.
The test drives are limited to one per household. When Triton Schools did this same program back in August they, were able to raise approximately $5,000 for various school expenses and student activities.

The event will feature 55 to 60 vendors selling various foods, crafts and other items. Proceeds from the event go toward Rolling Meadows, the Amish traditional school in Bremen. After being out of commission for a couple of decades, the Bremen Oktoberfest made a comeback last year for the Indiana Bicentennial. The event returns this fall and will run October 6th through the 8th. Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said this year’s festival will be chock-full of fun things to do for individuals of all ages.
The former Burger King on Plymouth Rd, in Bremen that has been abandoned for about 2 and a half years will be occupied by a new company following a decision made by the Bremen Zoning Authority during a meeting last week. Casey’s General Store received the BZA board’s approval on their submitted application and is currently going through the proper channels to purchase the property and receive all the necessary permits.
