Donnelly Announces Deadline for Service Academy Nominations

Hoosier students interested in pursuing a nomination to one of our nation’s service academies need to submit an application to U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly’s office by Friday, Sept. 25.

In a statement Donnelly says it’s a “privilege” to nominate outstanding young Hoosiers to the Armed Forces’ service academies each year. They include the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.; The U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.’ The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y. Scammers posing as IRS agents have separated unsuspecting victims from upwards of $20 million over the past few years, according to federal officials. State Police Warn of Scam Calls from Spoofed Number

The Indiana State Police confirm the published telephone number for their general headquarters in downtown Indianapolis has been spoofed over the last few days. That’s the practice of masquerading as someone else by falsifying the number as it appears on the call recipient’s caller ID display. In this case, people across the country receiving the calls saw 317-232-8248 come up. Sometimes the caller reportedly spoke with a “thick Indian accent” and claimed to be from the Indiana State Police. He then proceeded to ask for personal information from the caller and threatened arrest if they did not comply. Continue reading

Monday, Aug. 3 marked WKVI morning show host Tom Berg’s five year anniversary at MAX 98.3 FM’s sister station. He celebrated it in a Chicago hospital. Oncologists at Cancer Treatment Center of America confirmed his diagnosis of cancer in his colon, liver, lungs, lymph nodes, lining of his abdomen and possibly his stomach. Marshall County Approves Tax Abatement for Bourbon Company

A Bourbon-based business is now on its way to creating five new full-time jobs in Marshall County.

The County Council held a special meeting earlier this week to consider abating property taxes for Faulker Fabricating. The company has been in the Marshall County area for the past 25 years and says that property tax relief over the next 10 years will lead to job creation.

Refurbished Memorial Dedicated to ISP Motor Carrier Inspector

A new roadside memorial on U.S. 30 just east of Oak Road in Plymouth marks a life lost in that spot 20 years ago this month. Indiana State Police Master Motor Carrier Inspector Ralph “Ray” Reed had stopped to inspect a semi tractor-trailer and was struck and killed by an oncoming semi hauling cattle. He was the first ISP Motor Carrier Inspector to be killed in the line of duty. Continue reading

K9 Assists in Apprehension of Robbery Suspect

Officers from several area law enforcement agencies assisted in the apprehension of a man at a Koontz Lake residence on an out-of-county robbery warrant. They responded to a home in the 7700 block of Tippecanoe Drive this morning to arrest 30-year-old Cody Cooley on a warrant from Dearborn County. A news release from the Starke County Sheriff’s Office indicates they spotted him through a sliding door trying to hide in an upstairs closet. Continue reading
