AAA Tips for Drivers Attending Halloween Festivities

Many individuals will be utilizing their vehicles this week for various Halloween festivities. A study by the National Retail Federation found that Halloween parties for adults have been growing in popularity over the past decade. This means more adults will be out and about celebrating around the same time kids are walking from house to house to collect candy. Triple-A is offering a few tips to ensure a safe and happy Halloween for everybody.

In 2009, AAA reported that fifty-eight percent of all traffic fatalities in the U.S. that happened on Halloween night in 2008 involved a driver or motorcycle rider with a blood-alcohol content of .08 or higher, which is illegal in every state. Continue reading

Argos School Board Votes to Move Forward With Argos Academy Plan

Argos Superintendent Ned Speicher approached the school board this week with a proposal to use the former administration building for an educational resource center, according to draft minutes of their Monday night meeting.

Superintendent Speicher told board members that Argos Academy would be able to serve the educational needs of students who have been expelled from Argos Schools. He said the facility could also be a place for students who would benefit from a smaller learning environment that would help them develop skills that could help them adjust to the larger classroom setting. Warm Up Marshall County Coat Drive Collection

As temperatures continue to drop, individuals will begin breaking out warmer clothing when they prepare to leave their homes. Unfortunately, not everybody has that option. The national organization Warm Up reports that every winter, 14 million children across the country go without adequate winter wear.

Halloween Safety Reminders

Though Halloween isn’t officially until Tuesday, many areas will be celebrating early this weekend. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security has a few tips to celebrate the holiday festivities safely.

DHS reports that children are twice as likely to be killed by an automobile while walking on Halloween compared to any other time of the year. If you’re driving, be alert, drive slow and take extra time at intersections making sure no one is attempting to cross.

Walkers should also use sidewalks when they’re available. If there isn’t one, walk toward the far edge of the street and never cut through yards, alleys or across the road. Utilize crosswalks and be aware of potential oncoming vehicles. Continue reading

Argos High School Halloween Dance Tonight

The Argos Leo Club is hosting a Halloween dance tonight from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Jr./Sr. High School Cafeteria. The dance is open to students in grades 9 through 12. The cost to enter is $3 per individual or $5 per couple.

Students are encouraged to wear their costume to the dance for the chance to win a prize. Students can be awarded for their costumes in one of the following categories, best group, best couple, best individual or most creative. Continue reading

This Saturday, Plymouth Has Plenty of Ways to Get You into the Halloween Spirit

This Saturday, Plymouth Chamber of Commerce is hosting an event that will supply sugary sweets to costumed kiddos a few days before Halloween. Downtown Trick-or-Treat will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow. Michigan Street will be closed between Laporte Street and Washington Street from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Pilot News is hosting a costume contest starting at noon and MAX 98.3 will be on the site at 214 N Michigan Street doing a live remote describing the spooky scene.

Bremen, John Glenn and Plymouth Marching Bands to Compete in ISSMA Semi-State Competition

Four local high school marching bands will be heading down to Indianapolis tomorrow for the Indiana State School Music Association Open Class Semi-State Marching Band Festival.

Students from Bremen, John Glenn, Knox and Plymouth will join 80 other bands from around the state competing to be chosen as one of the 10 bands who will represent their class at the 45th Annual Indiana State Marching Band Finals.

Each band is entered into a category based on school size and that influences where they perform. Pride of Plymouth Marching Band is led by their director Bryan Ames and they will be competing in Open Class B. Their performance will take place at Pike High School around 2:30 p.m. Continue reading

Missing Walkerton Man Found in His Home

A Walkerton man who was reported missing earlier this week was found safe in his home today according to the Walkerton Police Department dispatch center.

The Walkerton PD issued a press release on Tuesday, seeking public help finding a missing person. The individual, 25-year-old Robert Allan McEndarfer reportedly hadn’t been seen or heard from since he left work in Napanee on October 19th. The release also stated his phone was found smashed on the side of the road.

As of Thursday, October 26th the search has been called off and McEndarfer is reported to be alive and well.

New Partnership Aims to Bring High-Speed Internet to All Hoosier Students

Governor Eric Holcomb and Indiana State Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Jennifer McCormick have announced a partnership that aims to give all Hoosier students access to the tools and resources needed for digital learning with high-speed internet in every classroom.

The state is teaming up with Education Super Highway (ESH), the nation’s leading non-profit focused on upgrading internet access in every public school classroom in America, at no cost to tax payers. ESH will work with the Indiana Department of Education and local school districts to determine need, whether that’s fiber infrastructure, greater and more affordable bandwidth or Wi-Fi upgrades. Arrest Made at Indiana State Police Bremen Post

On Tuesday, October 24th Indiana State Trooper Patrick O’Keefe arrested a Greenfield man for allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated after he drove to the Indiana State Police Bremen Post to speak to the trooper.

According to the Indiana State Police press release, O’Keefe made arrangements to meet 57-year-old Scott Schroeder at the Indiana State Police Bremen Post in order for Schroeder to retrieve some of his belongings from a separate incident. The release states that Schroeder arrived at the post around 5:30 p.m., parked out front and went to the door to meet O’Keefe. Continue reading

Bowen Family Medical Scholarship Wants to Help Fix Physician Shortage in Rural Indiana

There are almost 7,000 communities around the country with an inadequate number of primary-care providers, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. A 2016 study by the Association of American Medical Colleges found that in the next decade, the country could be short 95,000 doctors.

The lack of primary-care providers can affect urban and suburban areas to a degree but it is the rural communities, like those in Marshall County, that tend to be hit the hardest. The Bowen Family Medical Scholarship was established to combat the issue and focuses on meeting the health needs of rural communities by supporting primary-care medical students as they work their way through medical school and residency programs. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day This Saturday

This Saturday, individuals have the opportunity to help prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. The Indiana State Police and the Drug Enforcement Agency are holding the 14th Prescription Drug Take Back on Saturday October 28th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This service is free, anonymous and there are no questions asked. The initiative addresses the prevalent public safety and health issue of prescription drugs being obtained from family and friends in order to be abused or sold. In the past 13 drug take back events, the DEA and its partners have taken in over 8.1 million pounds of pills, which is more than 4,000 tons. Continue reading

Walkerton-Lincoln Township Public Library Project is Underway

Walkerton-Lincoln Township Public Library Director Traci Stewart said that ground breaking at the site for the new library took place earlier this month. However, in the next few weeks, construction will become more visible since work below the surface has been completed and now crews can begin working on things above ground.

Stewart said that foundation footings have already been installed, as well as drainage lines and a sewage system. She said this week, construction crews from the Elkhart based company Brown and Brown will be pouring the floors and putting up walls. Continue reading

Marshall County Treasurer Reminds Residents of Approaching Tax Deadline

Marshall County Treasurer Angie Birchmeier wishes to remind all community members that the 2016 payable 2017 tax bills second installment will be due Monday, November 13th. That means that individuals have three weeks to be sure all the correct information makes it to the proper channels.

Mailed payments must have the correct address, proper postage and be postmarked by the postal service by November 13th. If you wish to have a receipt, enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your payment.

The Marshall County Treasurer’s Office is located in Room 206 of the County Building at 112 W. Jefferson Street in Plymouth. There is a drop box on the south end of the County Building for after-hours payments. Continue reading

Goal Met for Culver Plastic Cap Project, Collection Continues for Future Additions

Representatives from the Culver and Lake Maxinkuckee Visitor Center are working with the organization Green Tree Plastics to transform ordinary plastic bottle caps that often get discarded into extraordinary additions for the Culver community.

Executive Director of the Visitor Center, Becca Pazin, said initially the project was focused on getting two new benches for the walking and biking trail that is currently being developed through the Stellar Designation program. She said it takes approximately 400 lbs to make one bench and currently the center has collected more than 1,000 lbs of caps.

They plan to keep collecting caps in order to make more benches for the path and other areas around town but Pazin said they’re also looking into different options that Green Tree offers such as converting the caps into waste receptacles, picnic tables and water stations.

Members of the Culver Boys and Girls Club are helping with sorting the caps and the Marshall County Recycle Depot assists with weighing and storage. Pazin said the project has brought the entire community together. Continue reading

Red Ribbon Week Starts Today

According to National Family Partnership, children of parents who talk to their teens about drugs are 42 percent less likely to use drugs than those who don’t, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations. Today kicks off the start of Red Ribbon Week, a campaign that aims to educate youth about the dangers of drug, alcohol and tobacco use and promotes prevention.

From October 23rd through the 31st, educators, parents and citizens are encouraged to look at ways they can help stomp out drug and alcohol abuse in our communities. Since it’s inception in the 1980s, the Red Ribbon program has helped educate millions around the world. Continue reading

Shiloh Woods Presents the Walk of Nightmares

Halloween is right around the corner and there’s a spooky way to spend your Saturday right here in Marshall County. The Walk of Nightmares will take place at Shiloh Woods in Plymouth this weekend and next weekend.

From 7p.m. until 11 p.m. tonight scare-seekers are encouraged to come walk the trails at Shiloh Woods, located at 5433 Quince Road. The cost of admission is $10 per person.

Cast members from Room 47 Productions will be at 15 different stations scattered throughout the woods. The haunted attraction has been rated “PG-13” so patrons are encouraged to be over the age of 12.

The attraction is also not recommended to individuals with heart conditions, epilepsy, extreme sensitivity to light and sound or any other medical conditions that could prove hazardous if exposed to environmental extremes. Continue reading

Lifeplex Dance Academy is Throwing a Fall Ball Tonight

The Lifeplex Dance Academy is encouraging community members to fall in love with dance at tonight’s Fall Ball. The event will run from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m and will be catered by Fusion Café.

From 6 until 7 o’clock tonight there will be line dancing that will feature various styles of music such as Latin, country, R&B and more. From 7 to 9 p.m. the Sentimental Journey’s Band will be performing live, playing 40s and 60s style music. Bremen Troopers Participating in Tip-a-Cop to Assist Special Olympics Indiana

Several troopers from Indiana State Police Bremen Post are participating in the annual Tip-a-Cop event to raise money for Special Olympics Indiana. From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. this Saturday, troopers will be working and collecting tips at a chain restaurant located at 4010 N Main Street in Mishawaka.

This is the 12th year that Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) has put on the nationwide Tip-a-Cop event which serves as not only a fundraiser, but a public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics Indiana.

The not-for-profit organization provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions in over 20 Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, reaching more than 12,000 athletes across Indiana. Since Special Olympics Indiana is not a United Way agency and receives no federal or state appropriated funds, they rely entirely on corporate, civic and individual donations. Continue reading
