PLYMOUTH – President of the Commissioners Stan Klotz came before the Marshall County Council during budget hearings to
bring up a cost on the horizon that was not included in the new budget. Yet.
By law, juvenile offenders are not allowed to be incarcerated with adults, and currently the county has no real place to detain those who are taken into custody for any length of time.
He told the Council that leasing beds at an out-of-county facility was the best of bad options.
The County has sent juvenile offenders to facilities in Fort Wayne and Muncie, but most times the juvenile would need to appear in court the next day, prompting Sheriff’s officers to make three trips for transportation to and from those facilities, sometimes in less than 24 hours, depleting the Sheriff’s departments manpower.
Klotz and the Marshall County Probation Department continue to work on options.
