The Plymouth School Board approved the choice of naming of the main gym at Plymouth High School for Hall of Fame Plymouth Coach Jack Edison during their meeting on Monday night.
“I’m here to ask you all to approve the naming rights for our main basketball floor in honor of legendary basketball coach Jack Edison,” said Athletic Director Josh Troyer.
The board voted unanimously for the move.
Troyer also told the board that the PHS Athletic Department will soon undertake a major fundraising project to renovate the gym itself. In the initial phase, Troyer hopes they can raise $200,000 as part of an estimated $600,000 total for the project.
The gym floor — that hosts boys and girls basketball home games as well as wrestling in the winter, volleyball in the fall, and off-season indoor practices for various sports and gym classes during the school year — is in need of complete replacement since it has reached the end of it’s ability to be sanded and repaired.
Along with that major renovation, other parts of the facility will see some cosmetic upgrades, such as paint, that haven’t been fully undertaken since the gym was opened in the late 1970s.
Troyer told the board the planned improvements normally have a lifespan of 50 years.
