Commissioners Urged to Address Road Issues

The Marshall County Commissioners were urged to take care of a lingering issue with roads in a subdivision.

“I appreciate the opportunity today to speak about deplorable roads in Nutmeg Meadows and ask not if but when we can see our roads properly addressed in 2025,” said Jeff Johnson.

Local homeowner Jeff Johnson read a prepared statement outlining the 25-year history of Nutmeg Meadows and the current condition of the roads, stating that four years ago, the residents of the subdivision had asked the county to replace the roads at that time, saying that the county performed a chip and seal fix on the road that Johnson said did not address the cracks and drainage issues in the neighborhood.

Johnson said that when he addressed the county a second time he was told that there was no money in the budget for the road and to come back in three years.

Johnson also presented the Commissioners with a packet of photos from Nutmeg Meadows, comparing them with other subdivisions in the county that had been fixed in the interim, and pointed out the significant property taxes paid by homeowners in the Nutmeg Meadows subdivision.

Before his presentation, President of the Commissioners Stan Klotz informed Johnson that Nutmeg Meadows was part of the project list presented for the coming year’s Community Crossings grant application. Klotz said that while there was no guarantee that the road would be done in 2025, historically, the county had received funding from the grant for all the projects submitted.

Johnson stated, “We are past due for road replacement – grants or no grants.”
