Marshall County Highway to Move ahead on Several Projects

Marshall County Highway Superintendent Jason Peters reported to the Marshall County Commissioners on activity in his department during their meeting last week.

Peters gave the board an update on bridges around the county reporting that work on Bridge #1 was close to beginning, once payment on the final parcel of land for the construction was completed.

The Michigan Road bridge north of U.S. 6 was slated for a deck reconstruction project, but due to the amount of work already planned, INDOT had suggested a reworking of the entire superstructure of that bridge as well to give it a much longer service life than the deck reworking. Peters asked the Commissioners to consider a letter of further financial commitment to that project.

Peters also gave the Commissioners a list of projects that will be included in this round of Community Crossroads grants. The Marshall County Council had given their support previously for the projects although the list of work to be undertaken wasn’t complete at the time of their consent.
Under that grant, the county will undertake work on 9th Rd. from Pioneer to the county line, Nutmeg Trail in a loop around to Nutmeg, 16 C Rd. from Redwood to Pear, and 3rd Rd. from King to West Shore. The total of the projects was $2,128,500 with the county match being $500,000 plus $130,000 for extra projects.

The Commissioners also gave the go-ahead for the Highway Department to purchase a hydro-vac boring trailer for $122,000. Peters said the Council had approved the purchase and an additional appropriation was forthcoming for it.
