The Plymouth City Council members took action Monday night to amend the garbage fee ordinance.
Plymouth City Attorney Jeff Houin said he worked with Clerk-Treasurer Lynn Gorski and Street Department Superintendent Jim Marquardt to determine appropriate fees.
Houin reminded the council that they agreed to extend the contract with Republic Services for one year as they were not able to get out Request for Proposals soon enough to negotiate a new contract with potential vendors. He said the process will be done in the spring in order to properly compare rates to keep services going for the community at the best rate.
He said the amended garbage fee ordinance has an increase to consumers as there is an anticipated cost with a new contract. He noted that the council has not increased fees to keep up with the current contract so this amendment is an effort to offset costs.
The ordinance has an residential unit increase to $19.88, apartment unit increase to $19.88 and a commercial fee increase to $39.80. It is a $3.31 increase to all units.
The ordinance will be advertised and will be in effect in the next billing cycle.
The ordinance was unanimously approved on second and third readings, thus adopting the ordinance.
