Culver Town Council Discusses Tornado Sirens, Light Purchase for Fire Department

The Culver Town Council members heard from Culver-Union Township Fire Chief Terry Wakefield who discussed upcoming proposed work on tornado sirens during their meeting October 10.

He said the aging tornado siren on State Road 117 is down as well as the one in the area of 15B Road. He asked the council to get batteries for the sirens. The batteries will not entirely fix the problems, but will help with a bit of the current issues. They were not functional when there was a tornado warning that was issued a few weeks ago in the area.

The council approved the purchase of batteries in the amount of $2,606.86.

Wakefield said he has spoken with the county fire chiefs and Communications Director Zach McGuigan about the issues to find a more permanent solution for all of the tornado sirens in the county. There could be more modern solutions, but Wakefield said more conversations are being held on the matter.

The tornado sirens are currently being tested the second Tuesday of the month.

Additionally, the council approved the purchase of LED lights for Engine 1 at the fire department as the generator has gone out. Wakefield said the LED lights will not draw as much energy from the battery and they are better and brighter. The cost presented was $3,225.70.
