Marshall County Election Board Discusses Resolution for Public Question on the Ballot

The Marshall County Election Board members discussed a resolution filed by the Bremen Town Council to include a public question on the General Election ballot.

The Bremen Town Council members have discussed increasing the number of council members from four to five for several years. The addition of the fifth member would relieve the burden of the clerk-treasurer to provide a tie breaking vote as it currently stands by statute.

Bremen Town Attorney Anthony Wagner told the town council during their second regular meeting in June that it would be beneficial for the council to include a question on this year’s November election ballot in order to get a person in the fifth seat and to later determine staggered terms of the five council members. The next time a ballot question could be available to voters is in 2026 as there are no elections in Indiana in 2025. As 2024 is the first year of the new terms of council members, it was agreed that now is the time to act.

With that, the council unanimously passed a resolution that expresses the desire of the council to increase the panel to five council members and to ask the public question on the November General Election ballot: “Shall the number of town council members be increased from four (4) to five (5)?”

The Marshall County Election Board unanimously approved the resolution during their meeting Thursday, July 18 so the question will be included on the General Election ballot for Bremen voters.

Bremen Town Attorney Anthony Wagner noted that the next steps in the process will be discussed in upcoming meetings in order to make necessary preparations if the Bremen voters favorably support the question.
