The Bremen Town Council members took time last week to discuss the possible allowance of UTV use in the town limits of Bremen.
The council members have been approached by a few residents asking for an ordinance that would allow the use of UTVs in the town limits of Bremen. They spent an hour discussing potential rules for an ordinance allowing that use.
The council members are concerned about safety of operators and responsible operation.
There are certain requirements that the council members would like to include in an ordinance. State statute does not require a driver’s license with the use of a UTV, mainly because they’re designed to be used in an off-road situation, but the town council would institute an age limit. They discussed limiting the operating age to at least 18 years of age and older.
The requirement of insurance would also be included in a proposed ordinance.
They would also like to require a local permitting process even though UTVs are required to be permitted through the state.
UTV operators would need to abide by the rules of the road and to obey posted speed limits, and note that a UTV would be defined as being operated with a steering wheel and possess a utility bed.
In general, the council agreed that they could come to a vote for the use of UTVs in the town limits. Town Attorney Anthony Wagner said he would develop a proposed draft ordinance to present to the council in August for review. He said he would look at ordinances in other municipalities and the one instituted by the county to include in a draft ordinance.
The council also brought up requests for the allowance of chickens within town limits and they generally agreed that they are not in favor of allowing chickens in town limits.
