A UTV accident claimed the life of a Walkerton man Sunday, May 26.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department was called to respond to a single vehicle accident in the 18,000 block of 4th Road near Walkerton just after 12:30 a.m. ET. Police say that upon arriving at the scene, they found a Polaris RZR UTV had run off the north side of the road and struck a tree. First responders gave aid to the driver, 49-year-old Jeffery M. Balmer of Walkerton, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation by officers at the scene believe that the UTV left the roadway for an unknown reason.
The collision is still under investigation, but alcoholic beverages and excessive speed are believed to have been contributing factors in the collision, according to the report.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by Walkerton EMS, Polk Township Fire Department, and the Marshall County Coroner’s Office.
