Sunnyside Park in Bremen is busy this summer as two large construction projects are underway – the most the park has seen in recent years.
The area that once housed the large outdoor swimming pool on South Alexander Street is undergoing a large overhaul that will present a new aquatics facility. The old pool has been deconstructed to make way for a water playground, or splash pad, area with plenty of water features that are interactive for children. Adjacent to that will be a zero-entry pool that goes down to only about four feet deep. The new water park area will feature shade elements or an all-day enjoyable experience and festive summer atmosphere for all who visit the area.
According to Park Superintendent Brian Main, the aquatics facility is a true custom design for the Town of Bremen. It was designed according to public input into the project. The total price tag is just under $3 million. It is being funded by Regional Stellar Communities dollars, TIF Funds, Park Department funds, and American Rescue Plan Act funds approved by the Town of Bremen.
The water playground will be functional at the end of the summer. The pool will not be ready until the start of the season in 2025.
Right across the street from the new aquatics facility at 525 S. Alexander Street park visitors will find six new pickleball courts. The construction of the courts is complete, but there are still a few items left on the list before it will be open for play. The pickleball courts are funded by READI funds, private donations and town funds with the total cost of the project at about $300,000.
A dedication, grand opening and ribbon cutting for the pickleball courts is tentatively scheduled for July 16 at 5 p.m. ET.
Main told MAX News that four new benches for the area of the pickleball court will be built by Casey Ton for an Eagle Scout project. To donate toward this effort, call the Bremen Parks Department through the Bremen Town Hall at 574-546-2044 for more information on how to donate.
