The Plymouth City Council members want to remind residents that golf carts are not to be operated on walking trails and on Michigan Street and Lake Avenue.
Councilman Randy Longanecker said there should be penalties for those who do not follow the city’s ordinance. Councilman Dave Morrow said young kids are often seen driving golf carts who likely do not have a driver’s license and are driving younger children on the golf carts. They suggested tougher ordinances to address these issues and to provide better safety.
There is a golf cart ordinance where golf carts are permitted on city streets and alleys. Michigan Street and Lake Avenue are considered a state highway and golf carts are not allowed on state highways per state statute. A golf cart driver is required to have a driver’s license. There are penalties for those who violate the ordinance.

City Attorney Jeff Houin said he is drafting a golf cart registration ordinance and will present that in a future meeting. In the meantime, council members Duane Culp, Dave Morrow and Kayla Krathwohl will be on a committee to look into this a little further, along with City Police Chief John Weir and Houin. They will be reviewing ordinances from other communities to potentially include in any future ordinance amendments.
