It’s been a fixture of Bremen since 1892 and the Bremen Town Council will soon be looking at funding to restore the old Standpipe.
Engineers from Jones Petrie and Rafinski conducted a structural engineering / architectural investigation and recommendations Report for the Bremen Town Council in 2023 which outlines several structural issues with the Standpipe that stands on the west side of S. Jackson Street, a half block south of West Plymouth Street in downtown Bremen
According to that report furnished by JPR, the Standpipe was built in 1892 and taken out of commission as a water utility facility in 1955. It was named an American Historic Water Landmark in 1975.
The engineers who did on-site analysis of the interior and exterior conditions of the Standpipe found several tuckpointing issues, brick integrity issues, rusting, erosion, and other abnormalities, including interior safety concerns, which warrant attention soon.
The council would like visitors to be able to go inside the structure to take in its historical value, but it is not at the point where it is safe.
The council members plan to search for grants that pertain to the restoration of historic structures, plus other avenues to come up with needed funds to rehabilitate the Standpipe so the residents of Bremen can enjoy the iconic feature for many more years to come.
