This Week is National Police Officer Memorial Week

National Police Officer Memorial Week is being observed this week, May 12-May 18.

Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel said this annual event recognizes the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers across the United States who have given their lives in the line of duty to protect and serve their communities.

Last year approximately 137 federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement officers gave the supreme sacrifice and were killed in the line of duty. There were also 25 K-9s killed in the line of duty. On average, 140 to 160 law enforcement officers are killed in the line of duty every year. In 2023, Indiana lost 7 law enforcement officers to line of duty deaths.

Sheriff Hassel asks residents to take a moment during this week to remember all police officers and pay honor to the law enforcement officers who were killed or injured in the line of duty while serving their communities.
