Marshall County Solid Waste Management District Executive Director Marianne Peters appeared before the Bremen Town Council members Monday, April 8 to invite them to a meeting to discuss a potential Marshall County Yard Waste facility.
Peters explained that the district’s board of directors allowed her to hire an engineering company to conduct a feasibility study in 2023. Upon completion and review of that study, she said the board allowed her to move forward with the next step in a proposed facility.
A committee was formed to look at potential sites for the facility, but she wants all municipalities to come together to discuss the project and provide feedback about what services should be offered.
“This would be a facility for county residents who don’t have an outlet for their yard waste, for municipalities for the collection and the processing of yard waste, county businesses such as landscapers or general contractors, and also as a site for county storm debris. If we should, God forbid, ever have a tornado or a flood event, it would be a place to take all of that debris and process it,” said Peters.
She said the facility would be situated on seven acres and mostly deal with mulching to begin with and graduate to a compost processing site after a couple of years after initial construction.
Grants would be sought for funding, and more funding options will be reviewed.
The meeting is set for Wednesday, May 15 at 6 p.m. ET at the Marshall County Solid Waste Management District office.
