Marshall County Sheriff’s Releases 2023 Jail Service Report

Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel recently released the 2023 Jail Service Report. It is an annual requirement to be presented to Circuit Court by the end of March.

According to that report, there were 1,605 bookings which was an increase of about 300 from the previous year. The average stay was 34 days with the longest stay being 345 days. The average daily population was 144.

The top 10 bookings for 2023 include failure to appear with 219, operating a vehicle while intoxicated with 210, possession of marijuana with 184, possession of paraphernalia with 116, possession of methamphetamine with 108, operator never licensed with 108, driving while suspended with 91, theft with 83, resisting law enforcement with 73, and domestic battery with 64.

The kitchen served 158,304 meals to inmates in 2023 with the cost of those meals being $350,309.60. The kitchen also makes dinner for the meals on wheels program which provides meals to the elderly and less fortunate in Marshall County.

There were 843 jail incident reports ranging from behavioral issues to battery upon a law enforcement officer. Most incidents were investigated by jail staff, but some were sent to the prosecutor for formal charges.

Several inmate programs are available throughout the week including a GED class, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, bible study, Purdue Extension classes, exercise class, creative writing class, art class, parenting class, and celebrate recovery class.
