Train vs. Car Accident Claims Life

A car was hit by a train at the railroad crossing on State Road 17 in Burr Oak Sunday morning.

Marshall County Coroner John Grolich stated that the Marshall County Dispatch Center was notified of the accident just before 9 a.m. Sunday, February 18. The northbound vehicle driven by 57-year-old Scott Sorg of Culver was struck by a westbound Norfolk Southern train headed to Chicago loaded with freight, and traveling at full speed at the time of the crash. Sorg was pronounced dead at the scene. The family has been notified.

Marshall County Sheriff’s Department deputies say Sorg drove around the downed crossing arms and pulled into the path of the train. The vehicle was thrown to the west and came to rest on the south side of the tracks approximately 100 yards west of State Road 17, according to the report.

The crossing was closed for several hours as officials conducted an investigation.

The Marshall County Coroner’s Office was assisted at the scene by Culver-Union Township EMS, Culver-Union Township Fire Department, Culver Police Department, Indiana DNR, Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, and Norfolk Southern Police and Safety Crew.

The collision remains under investigation.
