The Marshall County Commissioners took action Monday, February 5 to approve the 2024 Road Program presented by Highway Department Superintendent Jason Peters.
Peters proposed 27 miles of chip and seal roads; 21.5 miles of reclaiming roads, double chip and seal, triple chip and seal, and rejuvenation; and 21.75 miles of paving projects.
The projects are dependent on spring conditions, funding and how weather affects the schedule.
The current price tag for the program totals about $3.5 million, including maintenance. Peters noted in the report that he would like to increase the number of miles of chip and seal to 50 which would be an additional $460,000 plus maintenance costs. That would increase the bottom line to $4,030,460.
The road program is funded by Motor Vehicle Highway and Local Roads and Streets funding. The program has seen supplemental funds in the fashion of additional appropriations approved by the Marshall County Council out of the Rainy Day Fund in the past, and Council President Jesse Bohannon commented to MAX News that the council knows that road work is a top priority and they will be looking to find money in budget reserves with the hopes to provide at least $1 million in additional funds for this year’s road program.
The county is also seeking an Indiana Department of Transportation Community Crossings Matching Grant to complete additional paving projects.
